The place in Adelaide for Pho

Rare beef noodle soup, Vietnamese style. That most nourishing and tasty of soups that is eaten all day in Vietnam. Charlie's Shack also has other stand-out dishes like the special dumplings, alone or in a soup with bok choy, or the beef lemongrass noodle. We have never had a bad meal at Charlie's. Turnover is…

So many recipes, so little time

We have a freezer full of containers of stock that Andrew made this week.  And it's coming on winter here in the great southern land, so my mind is on soup.  I am about to make a pot of  leek and potato.  Everything chopped up and is ready to go in the pot. While I…

La Morada, Montserrat, Buenos Aires – Locro and Empanadas

La Morada, Montserrat, BA - Locro and Empanadas Originally uploaded by lou_roo On this day last year I was in Buenos Aires with my beloved Andrew eating empanadas and locro. And today I found out that I may have relatives in Argentina. A cousin who is is researching the family history along with my sister…

Things I love right now

My mother's old tea pot, my Australian native plant series china tea cup, my new kettle with different heat settings for various beverages and persimmons which are in season at the moment. Oh, and autumn weather!

Moroccan in Mooloolaba

Pictured below are the Moroccan meals we had at Semo's tonight. Both meals were traditionally cooked In a tagine and served with a choice of saffron rice or cous cous. We both chose cous cous. I had the chicken cooked on the bone with garlic, saffron, fresh coriander and onions, garnished with saffron potatoes and…

A good feed on the Sunshine Coast

Tonight Andrew and I decided to dine at our favourite restaurant in Mooloolaba, Hot Pippis. Once was not enough; we were both craving a steak our first night in town and we were not disappointed with the fillet steak. I was familiar with the Seafood Curry, Hot Pippis Signature dish as I have had it…

Desperately seeking downtime

Another day of work (Wednesday) then we are off to Queensland's Sunshine Coast for 5 nights.  A quick break to make a long overdue visit with Roo's mum and a chance to not have home chores to occupy us.  It's all work lately and my body threw a fit last week.  A bit of R&R…

Chili con carne

The chili turned out quite well. Just the right amount of bite and a bit of my secret weapon - a chunk of dark chocolate. My friend Ange gave me a bar of Lindt 70% dark chocolate with orange peel, so some of that went in. Went well with the cornbread from yesterday. Mmmmmmm.

And while we’re on the topic of old cookbooks…

Another cookbook that I bought during my Tempe years (1976 - 1979) was the somewhat alternative Tassajara Bread Book. My husband baked bread from this book in the 1990s and reckoned that he felt 'at one with the dough'. Well the book was brought to us by the Zen Mountain Centre in Tassajara Springs California,…

Making the most of a sick day

Well, as my previous post mentioned, I was having my third sick day EVER on Wednesday.  It is now Friday and I am still home, but starting to feel a little more human.  Glands still swollen (diagnosis of Pharyngitis) but much reduced by late morning today. Still feverish but not like the last few days. …
