Signs of Spring

What a welcome sight! Along with the sour-sops (weeds), each winter these lovely orange bulbs flower.  We have never planted them but somehow the bulbs have ended up here and we get the benefit of the lovely flowers. It's been a long wet winter but spring can't be that far off now.

No 2 soup – Asian food court, Chinatown, Adelaide

A long time favourite of mine. These Vietnamese ladies keep the stock pot going with some of the clearest broth in town. I love the No 2 because of the perfect glass noodles and the tender prawns, the tiny cubes of pork crackling and the chicken pieces that have fallen from the stock bones, the…

Light through wet winter branches, Adelaide

I walked through Victoria Square this evening on my way home and was struck by the beauty of the bare branches, wet from the earlier rain. The light made them look icy but it's not cold enough here for ice. Surely the worst of winter, such as it is in Adelaide, is over. The Greek…

Viva La Tour — go Cadel Evans

To celebrate the tour, we are enjoying cheeses and some lovely sour dough fruit and walnut bread.  The cheeses are Australian as is the Zinfandel we're enjoying, from Kangarilla Road winery. The bread is from Dough in the Adelaide Central Market.

Rocket, fennel, orange and almond salad

Rocket (Arugula to my North American readers) grows in my garden in winter. So, inspired by Amanda Daniel from 2bEthical who made a winter salad at the Adelaide Showgrounds Farmer's Market demo kitchen, I did a version of my own. All local produce including the olive oil that I used to warm the local almonds…

Lavosh, beetroot and horseradish dip and some prima donna cheese

The perfect starter to our Saturday night dinner - salmon, fennel, wasabi mash and steamed veggies. I think I feel a Riesling coming on. Cheers!

The place in Adelaide for Pho

Rare beef noodle soup, Vietnamese style. That most nourishing and tasty of soups that is eaten all day in Vietnam. Charlie's Shack also has other stand-out dishes like the special dumplings, alone or in a soup with bok choy, or the beef lemongrass noodle. We have never had a bad meal at Charlie's. Turnover is…
